General power relay is one type of relay, it’s a switch that use an electromagnetic coil to close or open the circuit, it includes armature, spring and many contacts. If you design the power relay to be normally opened, when it powered, the electromagnet attracts the armature and pull it in the coil's direction, when it reaches to the contact, the circuit will be closed. If you design the power relay to be normally closed, the electromagnetic coil will pull the armature away from the contact, then disconnect circuit.
